There was no JOSH in JOSHILAAY!

Shekar Kapoor directed the film and half way through left the project only to be later completed by Sibte Hassan Rizvi. Hence, the final credit for the direction went to Rizvi. It took almost 5 years to complete the project which was a poor/xerox copy of Sholay type of film. Initially titled 'Joshilaay Joshilaay' (the title repeated twice - I guess because for the two heroes)... the film finally released with only one title and moreover, the verdict being: There was absolute no Josh in the film at all. As it got stale and outdated when released, none of the artists took interest in the film. Sridevi's voice which was pleasant to hear from the beginning (also her dubbed voice by Naaz) was dubbed by some Jr. Artist for the film. And that sounded creepy. The film shot in deserts and forests, with dust, horses and guns had Sunny Deol and Anil Kapoor playing cowboy characters. Sridevi plays Reshma, a gypsy girl who pairs with Deol and Meenakshi plays a sad character in love with not so romantic Kapoor. The examples of the character are the same as Sholay. Deol does the Dharampa and Kapoor does the Bachchan. Sridevi, is the talkative Basanthi and Sheshadri is the silent Jayaji. Kulbushan Karbanda is the Gabbar here. RD Burman's music is good to hear but not good to see on screen. Watchable - only for Sridevi!
